What if primary care could bring patients together to share experiences, learn from each other and talk openly with staff – creating more flexible, inclusive and connected care, and making better use of NHS time and resources?
To address these challenges, we collaborated with Dr Chrysanthi Papoutsi at the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences to co-design models and guides that help practitioners and patients make the most of group video consulting sessions in primary care settings.

The guides were developed as a collaboration between the University of Oxford, University of York, University of Exeter and Design Science, with support from NHS England and the National Institute for Health Research.

We co-designed two online guides – one for practitioners and one for patients – that take people through the steps needed to run or attend a group video consultation at their local GP practice.
The guides provide an introduction to this novel approach, key principles to consider when deciding to run or join a session and step by step guidance for setting up, running and ending a group or hybrid session successfully.
The interactive guides are designed to be embedded into any website and have been developed to be accessible using screen readers.

We worked with Chrysanthi’s research team to recruit participants, prepare materials and run group workshops and one-to-one interviews with patients and staff to understand what they wanted from group video sessions.

We then helped the team analyse feedback and develop draft guidelines to make the sessions fair and effective. Following further research, we ran follow-up workshops with practitioners and patients to test and refine the visually led guidance.
Finally, we helped turn these insights into easy-to-use resources, focusing on a simple interactive tool that can be embedded on NHS or GP websites or shared directly with patients to view on their home computer or tablet.
