Artist

Joel is an interaction designer, lecturer and artist. He is currently running his own practice in London.

Joel is interested in making work that allows for real-time interaction between people, places and objects through the use of technology. He wants to create work that helps people experience their environment in a different way – their community, their perception and their interactions.

Ever since seeing the Wizard of Oz, Joel has been interested in the meta, the mechanisms or systems that enable stories to be told or society to function. He’s fascinated by the possibility of making systems that allow others to share their memories or tell their stories.

Joel studied Mathematics and Computer Science at Imperial (1998–2001) before completing an MA in Interaction Design at the Royal College of Art (2001–3). Post-graduation he worked at Benetton’s communication research centre, Fabrica, before returning to London where he worked as the interaction designer at UnitedVisualArtists, touring with the likes of U2 and Massive Attack, as well as collaborating on installation works such as Monolith, Volume and Hereafter.

After discovering openFrameworks, Joel co-founded the interactive collective YesYesNo with Theo Watson and Zachary Lieberman. In 2008 he co-founded the craft, design and technology studio Hellicar&Lewis with Pete Hellicar. They ran the studio together until 2016 with the express aim of building a creative business around Open Source.
